Presentation Title -

Project Management and Long-Distance Bicycle Touring

Presentation Abstract:

This is the third in a series of presentations Rick has shared with the Chandler Breakfast meeting.  Rick’s passion after retirement from Intel is long-distance bicycle touring.  Ever the project manager, Rick prepared for his first cross-country trek along the lines of PMI.  He considered stakeholders, budget, plans, risks and contingencies.  On the day of departure, Rick presented his plan in Chandler along with the address of a website where we could track his progress.

Over the following weeks, Tom Stokes (Chandler Meeting facilitator) tracked Rick’s writing and photos.  With minimal mechanical failure, Rick’s initial enthusiasm slowly gave way to the realities of solo bicycle touring.  Long days followed by camping outside in the rain and cold took their toll.  Rick had neglected a key element of project success - emotional endurance of the team.

While riding a bike across Colorado may seem a long way from the cubicle farm, Rick’s experience is a little too familiar.  How many times have we seen projects fail because the team breaks down?  We fill Work Breakdown Structures with elements of servers and software while making a basic assumption that the humans can deliver a productive 40-hour week regardless of the circumstances.  Most project failures are human.

Since this experience, Rick has done several long rides.  He has gained experience riding with others - both planned and ad hoc.  Now, Rick is planning a new trip.  Let’s see how Rick incorporates the “lessons learned” into this new iteration of his cycling project.
